What We Do:
SARP is dedicated to providing free crisis intervention, support, advocacy, and information to survivors of
sexual assault and abuse as well as to family members and friends. SARP is further dedicated to raising
public awareness of sexual assault and relationship violence. Services are offered 24 hours per day,
seven days a week to residents of Lynchburg and Bedford cities, and Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and
Campbell Counties.
The Services We Provide:
Crisis Intervention/Support (24/7)
Companions are on-call to assist anyone who has experienced any type of sexual violence including rape,
attempted rape, molestation, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, stalking, and relationship violence.
Information and referrals
SARP provides information in regard to reporting and medical options, community resources, victims’
compensation, victims’ rights, counseling, and support groups.
24 Hour A Day Outreach
Companions are available to listen, accompany victims through emergency medical, police, and court
related procedures, assist in providing food, clothing, transportation, and shelter. Companions work
closely with the Forensic Nursing Team at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Ongoing Advocacy
The assault and its aftermath can be disruptive to the victim’s lifestyle in many ways. A crisis period may
extend for several months or may recur years later. It can be helpful to talk with a non-judgmental and
objective listener such as a SARP companion.
Lending Library
A variety of books, pamphlets, brochures, and videotapes related to sexual assault, child sexual abuse,
stalking, and domestic violence are available. We also have a large selection of preventative education
materials.
Support Group
SARP offers a support group for Adults Molested as Children (AMAC). This group is run periodically on an
as needed basis. Group meets once weekly for 10 weeks.

Options for what to do if you have been assaulted:
Get to a safe place
Call 947-7273, the 24 confidential Sexual Assault Response
Program Hotline- you are not alone
Know that the assault is NOT your fault. No matter what, you did
not deserve to be assaulted.
Go to the hospital to get medical attention. There are forensic
nurses who are specifically trained to help survivors of sexual
assault. Even if you do not feel injured, they will make sure you are
okay and provide options like emergency contraception and STD
testing and treatment. There will be a representative from the
Sexual Assault Response Program who will meet you at the hospital
to help you through this.
Consider reporting with in 72 hours of the assault. Evidence
collection can only take place in this window. If you want to report,
make sure not to bath or brush your teeth so that evidence can be
collected. Also, make sure to keep your clothing from the assault and
bring it to the hospital with you.
Get help from friends, family, and others that are supportive
After the immediate crisis, consider getting long term help such as
counseling or a support group. Often, the recovery process from an
assault takes time and can be easier with help! At SARP, we offer free
counseling and support groups. Call 947-7422 for more information.
