Volunteer for one of our programs!

Crisis Line needs volunteers to provide phone support for people dealing with issues including
fear, loneliness, domestic violence, mental illness, and sexual assault and suicide.  

Ways to volunteer (click on link to view job description):

Crisis Line Volunteer
Crisis Line Internship

Crisis Line and Teen Talk volunteers must be at least 18 years old.  Since Crisis Line and Teen Talk
are 24 hour hotlines, volunteers can choose their schedules.  Volunteers are asked to man the
lines 9 hours per month.  Volunteers for Crisis Line and Teen Talk provide telephone reassurance,
crisis intervention, and referrals to anyone who needs help or assistance.

Chatterline

Chatterline volunteers must be 14 years old, and will volunteer from 3:00-6:00pm one weekday per
week (12-6 during the summer).  Chatterline volunteers provide a listening ear to elementary
school children who have a problem, need homework help, or just need to talk.

Sexual Assault Response Program (SARP)

SARP volunteers must be 18 years of age.  Volunteers for SARP serve two purposes.  They man the
SARP 24 hour hotline to provide telephone reassurance and support to survivors of sexual
assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and relationship violence.  Volunteers also serve as a
SARP companion.  After someone is sexually assaulted, the survivor is often taken to the hospital
for a medical check up and forensic evidence collection.  A SARP companion serves as an
advocate and support by meeting a survivor of sexual violence at the hospital, assisting with
crisis intervention, and helping the survivor understand his/her medical and legal options.  This
immediate support can make a huge difference in the recovery of a survivor.  SARP volunteer are
asked to take 3 twelve-hour shifts on call per month.

Telecare Volunteer

Telecare Volunteers must be 18 years of age.  Telecare volunteers are usually assigned one
morning a week to call participants in the Telecare program.  The purpose of these calls is to
check on the physical and emotional well being of the participants, and to help them feel secure in
their independence.

PowerGirls Day Camp Volunteer

PowerGirls is a Day Camp conducted by Crisis Line of Central Virginia and Girl Scouts of Virginia
Skyline Council.  2008 will be the third year the camp is held.  Camp is offered to rising 3rd through
8th graders, and the camp is limited to 125 girls.  In addition to traditional camp activities such as
archery and hiking, girls participate in self-esteem building workshops.  They learn the basics of
relationships, communication, personal safety, etc.  The camp has a staff of approximately 20
adults and 10 teens, most of whom are volunteers.
